Migori: Residents of Makerero appeal for action amid growing owl population
Locals in Makerero Ward, Migori County, have called on authorities to address the increasing number of owls that have been causing sleepless nights due to their eerie nocturnal hooting.
The areas most affected by the owl presence include Taragwiti, Kohego, and Bingutwi, where residents decried the birds’ night-time calls.
Area residents believe the owls are not ordinary creatures and hoot in mysterious phases, which has led to growing anxiety.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kibuna Magige, a local resident, explained that owls have long been associated with bad omen.
"These birds used to avoid human settlements, but now they seem to be drawn closer. This is alarming," he said. "Their presence is unsettling, and many believe it’s a sign of misfortune."
Magige added that there are no clear explanations for the owls' increased proximity to human habitats and urged the community to be vigilant in trying to scare them away.
Monica Ghati, another resident, expressed fear over the owls’ appearance, particularly their intense, unblinking eyes and haunting hoots.
"I don’t think it’s normal for owls to land on people’s houses. This is something that needs to be addressed," she said.
In response to the growing concern, Peter Rioba, Bishop of the PEFA Bukuria South region, called for prayer and divine intervention.
"We need God's guidance in this matter. No human can fully understand the significance of these events with mere common sense," he said.
