Matatu operators in Migori county have complained about the move to restore roadblocks as students return to school.

The move was made by the National Transport and Safety Authority to curb accidents.

However, PSV operators have argued the roadblocks have made it difficult for passengers to access bus stops and are a means of extorting drivers as they are stopped and some officers demand bribes.

This has led to some operators withdrawing their vehicles from certain routes, leaving passengers stranded.

“Parents are finding themselves stranded as there are few vehicles to transport their children as some operators have opted to keep off routes which are difficult to access due to roadblocks,” Jared Oketch, a representative of matatu operators in the county, said.

Parents have also complained about the hiking of fares during the return to school period.
