A section of Junior Secondary School (JSS) tutor interns in Migori county have lashed out at the Ministry of Education over what they describe as a lack of goodwill to hire them on permanent basis.

Speaking after a meeting with Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), they lamented that it was only fair for them to be hired on permanent terms after completing their training on the new curriculum.

Migori branch Teachers' Union chairman Orwa Jasolo faulted the Government for failing to honour a promise to hire the teachers on permanent terms.

“The government needs to think twice about this approach, otherwise the teachers will end up not being present for lessons next year. If the interns are not confirmed by January, we will resort to industrial action,” he said.

A section of teachers also complained that they are being forced to take on subjects that are not within their scope.

"There are up to 14 learning areas that one or two teachers are supposed to handle," one said.

The tutors called on the government to act to avert a strike.
