Two people were on Wednesday admitted at the Kerugoya Level 5 County Referral hospital after sustaining injuries following a fight involving matatu and small PSV operators at the Kerugoya main stage, in Kirinyaga.

The two factions are fighting over the Kerugoya, Kutus, Mwea route, a money maker for matatu business.

The fight came hot on the heels of a court order that allegedly allowed small PSV vehicles in the area to operate the controversial route – a decision that did not sit well with Kukena matatu operators plying the same route.

Matters came to ahead after Small PSV operators on Wednesday morning took over a main stage – following the court order.

Consequently, matatu operators under the Kukena Sacco blocked the route and the vehicles – claiming that the small PSVs had not complied with public transport regulations, and were giving them unfair competition.

The disagreement turned chaotic – leaving two matatu operators injured – and had to be rushed to hospital.

“The court has allowed us to operate in this route, but these matatu operators from Kukena have decided to close the road and block our vehicles,” said the Chairman of small PSV vehicles in Kirinyaga Joel Magondu.

“If they feel aggrieved by the decision of the court, let them go to court and have it addressed just as we did,” added Magondu.

Vice Chairman of Kukena matatu operators Muriithi Gichira said, “we are striking because these small unlicensed vehicles have been allowed to operate in Kirinyaga, affecting our business.”

Those injured in the melee were identified as Kukena Sacco Secretary Jason Maragwa and Geoffrey Nyaga, also an official.

Maragwa claimed he was hit with a stone on his back, while Nyaga suffered a suspected stab wound on the back.

The small vehicle owners have, however, maintained that they are protected by the court of law – and will thus continue operating on the route.

Kerugoya officer commanding station (OCS) Mr Kitheto and the Traffic Base Commander Kerugoya Mr Makembo have promised to meet officials from both parties to help solve the impasse.

Reports indicate that an amicable agreement has since been reached.
