The man who hails from Merti area of Isiolo was admitted at a local rehabilitation center, and is the second such case that the facility has handled in one year according to Collins Shabaan, a psychiatrist at the center.
Shaban said that the patient underwent a drug test and was found to have been excessively abusing miraa, bhang (cannabis), Chaves, tobacco, and antipsychotic drugs.
“It has barely been a month since his admission, but the patient is responding well to treatment and is starting to regain self-awareness,” said Shaban.
In addition to the patient’s mental health struggles, doctors are also concerned about the physical consequences of his condition. The patient has not fully recovered from the wound of mutilated genitals and now requires urgent penile reconstruction.
The man, whose name is withheld for privacy, is said to have inserted a metallic object into his manhood, which led to severe infection and he ultimately chopped off his genitals.
He was taken to Merti Sub County hospital and was later referred to Isiolo Referral Hospital then Meru Level Five Hospital where he spent over a month receiving treatment.
Doctors warn that without reconstructive surgery, the victim is at a high risk of falling back into depression once he fully recovers mentally.
The man is said not to remember harming himself.
