A man is currently trapped inside what residents claim is an 80-feet-deep pit latrine – after it collapsed as he was answering a call of nature.

The incident happened at the KM area – in the general Kenyatta University neighbourhood, within Kiambu county.

The latrine is said to have collapsed around 7am on Tuesday, and efforts are currently ongoing to rescue the man.

According to residents, the man operated a butchery in the area, and lived alone.

“The man was inside the toilet, relieving himself when the toilet suddenly collapsed,” said Moses Adi, a resident in the area.

He added that: “A child who was waiting to use the latrine survived after running upon hearing the rumbling noise, and so did another man who was using the bathroom side.”

Firefighters from Nairobi county are currently at the scene, trying to rescue the man who has been trapped for several hours now.

Police have cordoned off the area.

LATEST UPDATE AS AT 5:30PM

After several hours of digging through the mud, and pumping out hundreds of litres of water, the rescue team finally managed to retrieve the body.  The body was retrieved around 5: 30pm, and taken to Kiwanja police station. The deceased is yet to be identified.
