Man escapes death narrowly following hippo attack in Homa Bay

A 24-year-old fisherman narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a hippo while fishing near Kombe Uyoga Beach in Kasgunga Ward, Suba North Constituency, on Lake Victoria.

Ruben Otieno was left covered in blood and staggering to safety after the terrifying attack Monday morning.

His colleague, 34-year-old Dicken Orwa, was unharmed and rescued by fellow fishermen.

According to Edward Oremo, Chairman of the Homa Bay County Beach Management Unit, the hippo struck their boat, causing it to capsize.

While Ruben was attacked after the boat flipped, Dicken managed to escape. Ruben was rushed to Mbita Sub County Hospital for treatment.

Oremo expressed concern over rising human-wildlife conflicts in the area, urging the government and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to intervene.
