Man drowns in water-filled quarry in Embu
Residents in a village in Embu County are reeling in shock after a 63-year-old man drowned in a water-filled quarry.
The incident happened in Kathambaiconi village located in Kagaari South, Runyenjes Constituency.
Kwa Njagi area Senior Chief Daniel Ndwiga said they were forced to abandon rescue efforts due to lack of necessary equipment.
“We were forced to temporarily abandon the operation on Tueday but we resume on Wednesday morning,” Ndwiga said.
He at the same time urged residents to exercise caution around water-filled pits, which pose as a danger.
The latest incident comes amid mounting pressure on the county government to enforce regulations that will require excavators to refill the dangerous pits.
“Most of the companies operating in the area leave the pits open after completing their extraction work. We hope that the regulations, once in place, will help prevent such tragedies.
