Man drowns in river while walking from drinking den
According to some residents of Makwa village, Harrison Kamau frequently visited some of the drinking dens located along the cliffs of River Chania.
It is suspected that the deceased may have lost his footing while crossing the river before plunging into the waters.
Gatundu North sub county police commander Ellen Wanjiku confirmed the incident, but declined to say with utmost certainty that the deceased had been drunk.
“Out team is conducting investigations into the incident, and so we cannot just conclude that the man was drunk when he drowned," noted commander Wanjiku.
She added thus: “Our officers have put up a spirited fight against illicit brew. In the same spirit we appeal to members of the public to give leads on sellers and brewers.”
Speaking about the incident, Kiambu county illicit brew enforcement officers Peter Karanja and Charles Karanu noted that illicit brew was a major problem in the area.
“Just two weeks ago another man believed to have been drunk drowned in the same river Chania. The brewers are well known by the authorities, and nothing is being done,” noted the two county officers.
Kamau's body was taken to General Kago Hospital mortuary in Thika.
