Locals struggle as monkeys invade farms in Suna West, Migori County

Residents of God Kweru in Suna West, Migori County have decried the unending invasion of their farms by monkeys.

The issue has left many locals counting losses and struggling to maintain their livelihoods.

Timothy Odhiambo, a community leader, expressed the frustration felt by many farmers in the area.

"We have been working tirelessly, but we never get to enjoy the fruits of our labor because the monkeys destroy everything," he lamented.

The situation has become so dire that many people have abandoned the cultivation of crops altogether, fearing that their efforts will only be thwarted by the relentless primates.

Despite their best attempts at implementing various mitigation measures, Odhiambo noted that nothing has proven effective against the encroaching monkeys.

"It's disheartening for the community, and we're losing hope," he said.

The residents have reported their plight to multiple government offices in Migori County, but unfortunately, their pleas for assistance have gone unheeded.

The presence of the monkeys, they said, not only threatens the agricultural productivity of the region but also instills a sense of desperation among locals, who feel neglected.

"We need urgent help," Odhiambo added, as residents of God Kweru now turn their attention to the Kenya Wildlife Service, appealing for intervention.

They are also seeking compensation for the significant losses they have incurred due to the monkey invasions.
