Locals in Mlolongo, Machakos county decry poor drainage, uncollected garbage

Open sewers spill over to the road

Traders in Mlolongo, Machakos County have called on the authorities to address poor drainage and garbage collection in the area.

A spot check by Citizen Digital showed piles or garbage by the roadside and open sewerage systems.

Adjacent shops have been left exposed to the dirt, with traders decrying reduced sales.

“The filth also poses a health risk in this area. We hope the authorities will address this,” a trader said.

With the area bussing with activity, school-going children come into contact with uncollected garbage.

The ongoing rains have compounded the situation, with open sewers spilling over to the roads.

“We are forced to wear gumboots in order to ward off any infections,” a resident added.

They have called on the county government to move with speed and address their concerns.
