Laikipia residents resort to building bridge themselves after years of inaction

Residents of Tigithi Ward in Laikipia County have resolved to construct a bridge connecting seven villages following what they described as inaction by leaders in addressing their plight.
For the past one week, the residents have been fundraising with locals giving out donations in kind and material that has now seen the community-initiated project commence at the Iriuko bridge.
Lack of a passable bridge across River Tigithi has seen motorists take a longer and costly route to access Matanya Township, the main urban center in the ward and which provides a market for farm produce.
The small existing bridge can only serve pedestrians.
With the area expecting a bumper harvest following the recent el nino rains, the farmers hope the temporary bridge will assist them to take their produce to the markets
