Laikipia: Police vow to step up crackdown on illicit brew

Police in Laikipia county have stepped up their operation to fight illegal brew, with the latest crackdown being at Likii village in Nanyuki, where officers seized 30 litres of chang'aa and more than 300 litres of Kangara used to make the illicit brew.

Area chief, Martin Kariuki, said that the brewers have changed their tactics and locations on several occasions to avoid being caught by police, but added that their time is up.

However, he faulted courts for imposing lenient fines, which leads to suspects being released, only to continue with the illicit trade.

Laikipia police commander John Nyoike on Tuesday said that the crackdown on illicit brew extends throughout Laikipia and the trade has so far been fruitful in Laikipia West.

He lauded the Judiciary for cooperating by ensuring suspects are charged in good time. Nyoike was of the view that fines imposed have been sufficient to stop several residents from resuming the trade.
