A section of pastoralists living in Laikipia have taken up new cooking methods in a bid to conserve the environment and limit the use of traditional methods which involve the use of firewood.

This comes as environmentalists continue to warn against the destruction of forest cover.

The locals have now taken up the use of modern stoves that use less wood, which not only saves the environment, but also has less of a negative impact on their health.

“There has been an increase in health complications, such as eye diseases, especially among mothers using traditional methods that produce a lot of smoke,” Koinange Wahome, the Treasury chief in Laikipia county, said.

The stoves were donated by a Dutch lobby.

Rosemary Nenini, a local, said, "As an old woman, it has been difficult making trips and carrying firewood and my health has been impacted. With the modern stoves, I believe my health won't be negatively impacted."

Naiserian Lemayain, another local, said, "We know the importance of conserving the environment and now that we are using new stoves, we are happy that we will be contributing to conservation."
