Kwale: Locals want action from government amid rising sea level

A section of residents of Mkwiro village in Lungalunga, Kwale County, have decried the rising sea level.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, locals called on the county government to intervene in efforts to ensure their safety.

They added that they also fear that the graves of their loved ones, who are buried in the land, could be swept away by the raging waters.

"We are concerned about losing the graves of our loved ones after the area began eroding due to its proximity to the ocean," resident said.

According to Mshemanga Hamisi, the rising sea levels, an resultant effect climate change, are affecting the area.

He stated that some of those buried long ago have been washed up on the shore in the recent past.

He urged the government to help them build a wall to prevent the sea from encroaching.

"We need more manpower. Our efforts to have a wall built have so far not yielded any results," he added.
