Kwale: Close shave as boat capsizes with 19 fishermen on board

Nineteen fishermen escaped death by a whisker after their boat capsized in Kwale County.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident happened at Vanga area in Lungalunga Constituency.

Kwale police commander Stephen Ng'etich said that the boat capsized after it was hit by strong waves.

Officials from the Coast Guard rushed to the scene and rescued all the nineteen occupants of the boat.

Fishermen have been urged to be cautious when going about their activities.

It comes a day after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a four-day heavy rainfall, strong winds and large ocean waves advisory.

Meteorological Services Director David Gikungu said the heavy rainfall is predicted to intensify over the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin and the Coast regions on Monday and Tuesday.

The advisory further warned that the heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large waves in the Indian Ocean and strong southerly winds in the eastern region.
