A look at the building from outside would have one think it is just another abandoned and dilapidated structure.

However, on entering the structure located in Kwale, one discovers a structure with a dark colonial history.

The structure has makeshift windows that give a feeling of being constricted.

A resident of Gazi area, Mwatime Hamadi, describes to Wananchi Reporting the history of the building - which was formerly a prison - whose mud walls have human teeth plastered on the walls.

She says, "People who had been found guilty of wrongdoing were subjected to many injustices, including the removal of teeth, which were then plastered on the walls."

The building acted as a prison for suspects of various 'crimes', with inhumane punishment meted out on them.

Some of those who were taken to the cells include women who were had children out of wedlock, who were tortured.

The prisoners would have to make do with eating plants, which were given at irregular intervals.

Other inhumane acts meted out on prisoners included being cut using knives and chilli being inserted on the wounds.

Hamadi says that despite the building having a dark history, it should be upgraded and fenced to enable people interested in learning about the history to visit, while at the same time earning revenue for the local community.
