A section of villagers in Sasumwa village, Kuresoi Northset, on Wednesday set three houses alleged to be chang'aa brewing dens on fire in protest after a man died after consuming the illicit brew.

Peter Kering, chairman of Nyumba Kumi in the village, said that the man in his 40s passed away after consuming the illicit brew at one of the dens.

"We have been battling trying to eradicate the consumption of illicit brew but have been unsuccessful as culprits keep setting up new brewing dens," he said.

Joseph Ruto, a village elder, said that locals were furious over the death and torched the houses of the suspected brewers.

"We have informed the security officers as well as the chiefs, but they have not done anything to arrest the situation," he said.

Joyce Ngetich said that many women have suffered as their spouses have become unproductive members of society and spend all their time in the brewing dens.

"We are not relenting on this, and we are calling on the government officers to crack down on the culprits," she said.
