Kitengela, Rongai, Ngong and Kajiado towns take steps to curb illegal and unregulated development

By Esther Njeri  Kitengela, Ngong, Ongata Rongai and Kajiado towns have been grappling with the challenge of unregulated construction and garbage management.

To contain the problem, residents looking to undertake development activities in the towns will henceforth be required to obtain clearance documentation from the area’s residence association.

According to the residence, the move is aimed at ensuring development activities adhere to set protocols for the purposes of aligning functionalities in the towns of Kitengela, Ongata Rongai, Ngong and Kajiado town.

The residence association comprises of residents, comprising professionals and locals from different fields, representing the four major towns of Kajiado.

The residents have come together to help bring order around activities such us ensuring that building are construction activities follow stipulated laws -- and that they do not encroach on impede other developments.

Also, the association will help with the managing of the sewer, drainage and garbage menace in the towns, as well as ensuring that roads in the estates are well-demarcated and preserved even as development activities continue to rise.

According to residents, the group is tasked with giving the five towns of Kajiado a good and welcoming facelift.

This comes at a time when residents have raised concern over rising cases of unregulated construction works – most of which have flouted the county and estate by-laws or regulations.

The result has led to flooding whenever it rains, bad or grabbed roads areas, garbage and drainage menace among other problems.

Those seeking to undertake development work will be required to seek clearance from the association body – before getting a nod from the county government.

According to residents, this will help since the association representation is always on the ground and in contact with the people.

“Our mandate is to help bring back order, to make sure our towns can grow within the right and acceptable structures,” said Kajiado county Attorney Augustine Sekeyian.

Sekeyian raised concern over rising cases of people rushing to courts to stall cardinal procesess meant to streamline development activities in the towns – noting that resident association body will be a key player in the determination of such matters.

“This will help to reduce traffic congestion in our towns, and eliminate unregulated and illegal construction of buildings in the area,” said the resident association Kitengela chairman Musa Mali Andrew, adding that their job is to help the county government.

The move will also help mitigate problems like fire outbreaks, even as the association does the job of helping to evaluate, and regulate building and other development activities to within acceptable parameters.

According to Kajiado lands Minister Hamilton Parseina, the association will help the county government to realize its objectives.

“Our office has given the association the mandate to do their job diligently, and with dedication,” said Hamilton

“The residents must and should have a say in such matters as development in the county. I urge many to join hands and support the association,” said Hamilton.
