Kitengela: Over 200 families affected by floods are currently camping at a school
A number of families have been forced to seek shelter at a private school in Kitengela after floods destroyed their houses and property.
Reports indicate that a majority of those sheltering at the Milgate school are children aged between one and four years.
Reports indicate that over 200 families are currently camping at the school.
It does not help matters that schools are set to reopen on Monday, May, 13, 2024.
Some residents of Kitengela have come together to offer help to those afflicted by the floods in the area.
According to Beatrice Namodi, who is part of the leadership team at the school camp, Good Samaritans have been giving out food items, mattresses and clothes to offer comfort to the affected, but there is still need.
She said: “The residents came together and decided to offer a helping hand after realising that women and children camping at the school had no beddings, food and warm clothes.”
The residents, under the leadership of Beatrice, are asking stakeholders, the county government of Kajiado, and the national government to intervene.
Kitengela inter-estate chairman Andrew Kachengo has pleaded with the residents of the area to come out and help the afflicted.
“Most of those affected by the devastating floods have also suffered psychological damages, and so they need emotional and psychological support to overcome their losses.”
Kachengo said that there was a great shortage of councillors and trained psychologists whose service input can help mitigate the devastating situation many of the affected are dealing with at the moment.
