Kisumu farmers count losses as rains destroy rice fields

Rice farmers at West Kano Irrigation Scheme are staring at losses as floods continue to wreak havoc.

Scheme chairman Jared Odoyo said rice on the 650-acre piece of land is wasting away.

He said many farmers took loans develop their farms, but are now staring at losses.

“Farmers are at crossroads since they must repay the loans and with schools opening next year, it is going to be a disaster,” Odoyo said.

He said the bumper harvest farmers had hoped to get in January next year is now a distant dream.

Odoyo also raised concerns about the outlet pump that he said has failed to cope with the magnitude of water, and appealed to both the county and national governments to assist farmers to acquire a new pump.

“The outlet pump has been a problem for the farmers for two decades,” he said.
