Kisii: Campaign to end FGM in high gear
In Kisii county, efforts have been made to fight the vice and sensitise the public on the harmful effects to counter cultural beliefs.
According to the recently released Kenya Demographic & Health Survey (KDHS) data for 2022, the FGM prevalence is 15 percent in Kenya.
Eslas Nyaramba, a resident, said the community needs to be sensitised about the harm caused by the practice.
She said some people go to extreme levels, including sending girls across the border to undergo the procedure.
Gladys Orina, a victim of FGM, says she was forced to undergo the procedure when she was young.
''I was in so much pain and it is not an experience I want any other girl to go through," she said.
A sensitisation drive was held in the county to discourage the practice and help the community stop the harmful practice.
An issue that was raised was the rise in cases of medicalised FGM, with participants in the sensitisation drive saying more needs to be done to curb the vice.
