A truck driver died on the spot after a lorry he was driving collided with another one at the Tana bridge along the Makutano-Makuyu road in Kirinyaga County.

Three other people sustained serious injuries and had to be rushed to hospital.

Mwea-West Sub-County Police Commander Wilson Koskei confirmed the incident.

“The two lorries were travelling in opposite directions; one was heading to Nairobi from Meru, the other lorry was heading towards Makutano," said Koskei.

Adding that: “One of the lorries on reaching the bridge, left its lawful lane and encroached to the opposite lane leading to the accident. One of the drivers died on the spot, the other passengers sustained serious injuries.”

According to the residents, the accident led to a traffic snarl-up which lasted until around 3am, Tuesday.

The two damaged aged vehicles were towed to Sagana police station.

“The body of the deceased was taken to Murang'a hospital mortuary awaiting identification,” said Koskei.

The officer urged motorists to follow traffic rules when on the road.
