A section of farmers from Tsunza area in Kinango, Kwale county, have taken up prawns farming to diversify their sources of income.
The group received 3,000 fingerlings which will be grown in ponds.
The fish were hatched at the Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Shimoni area.
This was the first batch to be hatched at the center since its establishment.
Prawn farming in ponds aims to eliminate the challenge of lack of high-quality fish, which has been an issue, and to ensure food sufficiency.
In addition, the fishermen have received training on how to raise the prawns, from feeding them, pond management and finding a market.
