Kathangaita: Where residents of Mlolongo troop to enjoy the park
You will also see a few empty packets of biscuits, crisps and other soft eatables scattered on the ground.
Residents of Kathangaita, in Mlolongo town, within Machakos County, say this is a common scene especially on weekends.
Revellers love to gather at this new spot to pass time. Hawkers too love it, and have been making some decent sales on Saturdays and Sundays.
A few metres away is a continuous wall of electric fence, and beyond it lies an expansive thicket; a mixture of shrub, grass, trees and more trees. Then there is the mighty SGR railway line snaking its way in the early parts of the park.
Nairobi National park can be seen staring directly into the faces of the residents of Kathangaita estate in Mlolongo area, Machakos County.
It’s a Friday afternoon, and so not many people have come to enjoy the beautiful view of the park albeit from a safe distance.
“It gets full especially on weekends when people are not at work,” says Anthony Musyoka who resides in Mlolongo.
Although it’s a Friday – a few people can be seen sitting not very far from the fence overlooking the park.
Their eyes are fixed on the park; scanning for any sign of antelopes, zebras, buffalos and just about anything the wild can offer.
Mike Olweya, a resident of Kathangaita told Wananchi Reporting that he only comes to the spot to enjoy the sunset.
“People come from as far as Syokimau, Nairobi and Kitengela towns to just sit and enjoy the beautiful view,” he says.
Adding: “Couples too love coming here to have a good time. Families too love it,” he says.
Some of the residents of Mlolongo who spoke to Wananchi Reporting said the town does not have a suitable public rest area which is why many are trooping to this spot.
