Kapsabet traders raise alarm over rising insecurity
The association of traders in Kapsabet, Nandi county, have raised concerns over the lack of security that has been witnessed in the town in the last couple of weeks.
The traders say that they have been forced to close their businesses early for fear of being attacked.
Led by Elly Chepkwony, the chairman of the association, the traders have complained that their businesses are frequently raided and they have been counting losses.
“There are also no street lights, which makes it easy for thugs to target businesses and escape after their criminal activity,” he said.
Elly Chepkwony, the chairperson of KNCCI in Nandi county, said, "Business owners are wondering how they will contribute to the economy of the county when their efforts are thwarted by criminal activity. The security apparatus should increase patrols to deal with the insecurity."
He continued, "When we ask about patrols, we are told the police station has no vehicle. Yet it's a big police station and this should not be the case."
Traders also called on youths to engage in productive activities and desist from crime.
Festus Kipkoech, a trader, urged his colleagues to report crime as soon as it happens so that action can be taken.
"We are not going to continue operating as if it's business as usual. Crime must stop," he said.
