Kakamega county’s move to approve a bill that requires owners of land in municipal areas to start paying taxes has angered a section of residents, who have vowed to hold protests calling for the law to be scrapped.

Speaking in the Shirere ward, Lurambi constituencyresidents led by Jared Mukoshi and Joe Serenge have given the county government one week to scrap the law.

The Kakamega county assembly, through the land committee organized a public participation meeting in Kakamega town.

Mukoshi said, “The majority of those who attended the meeting opposed the bill, so we wonder how they went ahead to pass the unpopular bill.”

Serenge said, "We have refused the proposal and we will hold protests if the county will not listen to the people."
