Kakamega: Probe as police officer accused of shooting tuk tuk passenger during altercation with driver

Transport operations were temporarily disrupted in Kakamega after tuk tuk drivers protested against the shooting and serious injury of a passenger by a police officer.

It is alleged that the plainclothes officer was aboard a tuk tuk that was heading towards Khayega on Thursday evening.

When the vehicle arrived at Shirere area, the officer is said to have ordered the driver to head to the policestation, as he protested against him allowing other passengers on board.

This led to an altercation between the two, as the driver proceeded on the journey, causing the tuk tuk to veer off the road into ditch.

The officer, who hadn’t identified himself, then opened fire, and in the process seriously injured a passenger in another tuk tuk that was behind them.

The victim was rushed to the Oasis medical center and was admitted.

The doctor said they performed surgery and removed two bullets in the shoulder and arm.

Police said investigations are underway, with the culprit having fled.
