Kajiado: Locals block Namanga road to protest against rising number of accidents

Police boss John Odhiambo speaks on the protests in Kajiado.

A section of residents from Kajiado county took to the streets on Thursday to protest against the rising number of accidents.

Transport activities on the Namanga highway were brought to a standstill as a result.

The most recent accident involved a boda boda rider, who was hit by a truck and succumbed to injuries.

Residents lit bonfires on the road, which caused a traffic snarl up.

Francis Chege, a driver, said, "Heavy traffic has been caused by the protests. The protesters said they have had enough after a boda boda rider was hit by a truck."

The locals also called for stationery trucks that need repair to be banned from parking on the side of the road as they also cause accidents.

Shadrack Kampeini, one of the protesters, said, "We are tired of losing people to accidents that are preventable. Something has to be done."

Police arrived at the scene and dispersed the protesters, and said action would be taken against those parking illegally on the side of the road.
