Isiolo, Samburu counties to up efforts to beat livestock theft

Isiolo North Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Musango

Security players, elders, and peace committee members from Isiolo and Samburu East sub-counties have agreed to implement more proactive solutions to insecurity.

During a peace meeting involving elders in Samburu County, Isiolo North Deputy County Commissioner Patrick Musango said that the government would now implement the new suggestions and proposals agreed upon to curb the rampant cases of insecurity.

Musango said that elders had agreed that villages, where stolen animals are found, will now have to surrender the stolen livestock, the criminals, and the firearms used in the attacks.

Previously the government had been demanding a release/recovery of stolen animals, a practice that has proved ineffective since no action is taken towards the criminals.

According to the administrator, in most incidents of cattle theft, lives are usually lost and people have to be accountable for them.

He said no one would be spared from the new approach.

He called for communities in the area to abandon retrogressive practices and embrace educating their children, especially girls, adding that education would help them cope with the new challenges facing the pastoralists which include climate change.

Omar Godana, an elder from Isiolo lamented over the many incidents of insecurity and called for a change in the way residents from the area approach education.
