County governments have been urged to hire more veterinarians to curb cases of animal diseases.
Speaking at a meeting ahead of World Rabies Day in Kwale on Thursday, the chairman of the association of veterinarians Kelvin Osore lamented that county governments employ few veterinarians, which cripples the government's efforts to deal with problems such as rabies.
The acting director of the Animal Medical Services department Allan Zegelle said that the government aims to eradicate rabies by the year 2030, adding that the services of veterinarians are crucial to achieving the target.
Kelvin Osore, the Kenya Veterinary Association chairperson, said the professionals have been neglected and urged both the county and national governments to look into their welfare.
"We are critical in helping curb cases of rabies and other animal diseases and we urge the government to look into our welfare. Interns are not being paid," he said.
On his part, Allan Azegele, deputy director of veterinary services, said the government was conducting a campaign against rabies and other animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease.
