Police in Githunguri Sub-county have launched investigations after discovering a loaded firearm that had been abandoned behind Githiga Police Station.
According to police, the discovery was made by a local working as a Community Service Officer ( CSO) at the Chief's office.
The man was clearing bushes behind the station when he noticed a suspicious blue plastic bag hidden in the thicket.
Kaberu opened the bag and was shocked to find a pistol inside.
He rushed to the station’s report office and informed the officers on duty and the incident was booked under OB 13/21/04/2025.
The matter was then reported to the in- charge armoury, escalated to the Deputy Officer Commanding Station, the Githunguri Sub-county Police Commander, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO).
Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) from Kiambu visited the scene, processed the location, and documented the case.
"The recovered firearm was identified as a Jericho pistol, serial number KE.KP.44321352. It was found loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and showed signs of partial rusting and exposure to mud, indicating it may have been abandoned for some time," the police said.
Preliminary checks linked the firearm to a previous police report filed at Limuru Police Station.
It had been listed in a signal reference dated February 16, 2025, under KPS/DIG/CENT/KBU/LIM/LIMTPS/S&C/2/VOL.I/52.
The weapon has since been secured as an exhibit by the Sub-county Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO) in Githunguri, pending further forensic analysis and follow-up by the County Criminal Investigations Office (CCIO) in Kiambu.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine how the weapon ended up near a police facility and whether it is connected to any recent criminal activity in the region.
