Embu farmers embrace new irrigation techniques amid climate change challenges

As climate change continues to impact traditional farming practices, farmers in Embu County are turning to innovative irrigation techniques to maintain crop yields and secure their livelihoods.

The region, known for its rich agricultural production, has faced irregular rainfall patterns in recent years, leading to a decline in productivity.

In response to these challenges, the Embu County Government, in collaboration with agricultural experts and non-governmental organizations, has introduced a range of modern irrigation methods, including drip irrigation and the use of solar-powered water pumps.

These techniques are designed to optimise water usage and ensure that crops receive adequate moisture, even during dry seasons.

John Mwangi, a farmer from Mbeere South, shared his experience with the new technology.

"Before, we relied on rain-fed agriculture, and when the rains failed, our crops suffered. But with drip irrigation, we can now grow our crops all year round, regardless of the weather. It has been a game-changer for us," he said.

The County Government has also been conducting training sessions for farmers, helping them understand how to implement these new systems effectively. According to Agriculture CEC John Nyaga, the initiative aims to empower farmers to adapt to changing climatic conditions and ensure food security in the region.

"We have seen significant improvement in crop yields since we started promoting these irrigation techniques. Our goal is to have more farmers adopt these practices to mitigate the effects of climate change and improve their income,” Nyaga stated.

The introductions of these irrigation methods have also sparked interest in younger generations, with many young people in the area now viewing agriculture as a viable career option.

Local youth groups have begun forming cooperatives to take advantage of the opportunities presented by modern farming techniques.

While the adoption of these technologies has been largely positive, challenges remain. The initial cost of setting up irrigation systems can be prohibitive for some farmers, and there are ongoing efforts to provide financial support and subsidies to encourage wider adoption.

As the Embu County Government continues to push for sustainable agriculture, it is clear that embracing new technologies will be key to securing the future of farming in the region.
