Efforts pick up to restore mangrove forests at the Coast

The cutting down of mangroves for use as building materials and firewood and bait harvesting has threatened conservation efforts.

In a bid to address the threats, environmental groups have come together to ramp up conservation efforts and plant 30,000 seedlings.

Mangroves are essential for the ecological balance at the Coast, and their restoration has triple benefits for the community, the environment, and the economy.

Communities, through the Community Forest Association (CFA), partner to protect, conserve, and preserve the mangroves. The CFA trains community members on restoration and monitoring restored sites to ensure the reliability of the restorative initiative.

"Long ago, we faced many challenges, but now that the Kenya Forest Association is involved, we believe that the problems we are facing will soon come to an end," a local resident tells Wananchi reporting.

The mangroves also contribute to the tourism sector.

The restoration of Mida Creek's mangrove forest will benefit the community by providing a source of income and preserving the ecosystem. It will also help preserve the biodiversity of the area, which is essential for the survival of many species.
