Concern is mounting over the deteriorating state of the Tenwek Bridge on River Nyangores in Bomet Central sub-county, Bomet County, with residents warning of a looming disaster if urgent repairs are not undertaken.
According to concerned residents and users, the bridge has shown significant structural damage. A photo taken at the scene reveals a crumbling edge, exposed reinforcement, and makeshift warning markers including a tree branch and a red cloth — signs of community efforts to prevent accidents.
"This is the same spot where a grisly accident occurred last year," one resident said.
Despite an outcry, the bridge remains neglected, raising fears that history may repeat itself.
Users and locals rely heavily on the Tenwek Bridge as a key link between Bomet -Nakuru Counties,Bomet town and its surrounding villages, including those accessing Tenwek Mission Hospital, a major health facility in the region.
The bridge's current condition poses a risk not only to motorists but also to pedestrians and school children.
Residents are now urging the county government and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to take immediate action before another tragedy occurs.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen. Are we going to wait until more lives are lost?” asked a boda boda operator who uses the bridge daily.
As the rainy season intensifies, the structural integrity of the bridge could worsen, further endangering public safety.
