An alarm has been raised over the rising cases of cataracts and other eye conditions among residents in Baringo.

According to Caroline Tallam, an optician, lifestyle issues are to blame for many cases.

Some of the issues cited for the rising cases include the use firewood and other factors such as old age.

A figure of 2,000 new cases of cataracts has been reported occurring every year.

According to the National Eye Institue, a cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye.

Cataracts are common as one gets older.

Tallam, while speaking at a medical camp in Baringo North, urged locals to have their eyes checked regularly to catch disease early.

"The earlier these conditions are caught, the better so that adequate treatment is done," she said.
