Clothes made from wood shavings: Call for recycling, upcycling in climate smart fashion
Speaking in Diani on Thursday during an exhibition of upcycled clothes, Erica Muthoni, a designer, said that the improper disposal of fabrics pollutes the environment.
She urged designers to take up recycling and upcycling to save the environment.
Children and adults alike walked around the beach in their colourful attire made from a variety of items, including wood shavings.
Upcycled fashion involves using bits of materials left over from creating other clothes to make a new set of clothing.
“Students should be trained on how to take care of the environment, plant trees, clear water bodies of waste and make recyclable products,” she said.
Muthoni continued, “Upcycling ensures there is no wastage. We need to start teaching children the importance of conservation from that early age so that they grow up knowing why it is important.”
Leaders across the globe are currently convening in Dubai for COP28 to discuss climate change and how to mitigate its effects.
Kenya has received funding for several projects at the summit.
Environment Cabinet secretary Soipan Tuya has said Kenya is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
During the exhibition, models showcased outfits made from various recyclable materials.
