Chaos erupt after Form 3 student shot dead in Lamu
Grief has engulfed the small communities of Hindi and Mokowe in Lamu county following a shooting incident that left a Form 3 student.
Mohamed Shee was reportedly shot and killed last night at around 11pm.
According to family, the student was shot and killed while walking home after attending a wedding in Mokowe.
He was in the company of a female cousin – who was not harmed.
According to the residents, the young man may have been shot by police officers on patrol – a claim that is yet to be investigated.
Sunday morning saw businesses closed after angry residents took to the streets to protest over the incident – and demand justice for Shee.
Residents blocked the Hindi-Mombasa Road for a significant period of time to express their anger.
The demonstrations were cut shot after police lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the rioters.
Lamu Justice Network CEO Mr. Yunus Is'hakia expressed concern over the incident, and demanded swift action from the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Is'hakia asked that thorough investigation be done to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the student.
Lamu Coordinator for the Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI), Mohamed Skanda, also condemned the killing.
He blamed the police for the shooting, and decried the increasing number of cases involving the police harming innocent citizens.
Skanda asked that immediate and necessary measures be taken against the perpetrators, urging authorities to ensure justice is served.
Reports indicate that Shee was shot in the area around the left shoulder, with the bullet exiting from the right side, causing fatal injuries.
The Lamu County Security Committee is now actively investigating the incident.
“In light of this development, the committee is urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing security operations in the area,” said the committee.
