A section of residents in Busia County have called on the authorities to seal open manholes in the border town.

Led by branch bodaboda chairman Bonface Okumu, they said the open sewers are a ticking time bomb.

“One can easily fall into the open manholes. Both pedestrians and motorists are at risk,” Okumu said.

According to them, several cases have been reported, thanks to the open manholes.

“We have seen several people get injured after tripping into the manholes. Cars have been damaged as motorbikes camp at garages in the area,” they added.

Locals added that most of the manholes are located around hotels in Busia town.

“Eating in such establishments becomes a headache because the environment is not welcoming at all,” another added.

This comes despite the assurance from the county to fix the open sewers.

Earlier this year, county officials among them Peter Odima and David Okello pledged to address the matter.
