Busia: Losses as cargo truck catches fire in Malaba

Property of unknown value was destroyed after a cargo truck caught fire in Malaba town, Busia County.

The incident on Wednesday morning raised fears of a potential fire disaster amid the traffic congestion at the border town.

Residents expressed concern that the fire could spread further, as fuel tankers lined up near the Kenya-Uganda border.

According to witnesses interviewed by Citizen Digital, the truck driver was cooking with a gas cylinder beside the parked vehicle before the explosion occurred.

The incident comes just days after several shops in Malaba were destroyed by fire.

Locals are now accusing the Busia County government of neglect, criticising the lack of a stationed fire brigade in the town to handle such emergencies.
