Bomet University student Maryanne Wangari was strangled to death, postmortem shows

Bomet University student Maryanne Wangari was strangled to death, a postmortem examination has revealed.

Longisa Referral Hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr Weldon Kirui led the postmortem exercise following the death of the 22-year-old student.

“The findings indicate that the student died of strangulation and there were also other findings from the genitalia where lacerations were widespread. There were no other injuries found in the body,” Dr Kirui told journalists on Tuesday evening.

The body of the fourth-year communications student was found floating in Nyangores River on the outskirts of Bomet town on Monday after she went missing on Tuesday last week.

Bomet Central deputy police boss Bashir Ali said four male students and a lady are being questioned over the incident.

"Our experts are analysing phone data in efforts to trace the last steps of the deceased," Bashir added.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Secretary-General Dr Elizabeth Chirchir urged police to provide adequate security for students in rental estates.
