Bomet residents alarmed by rampant theft of motorcycles
Residents of Koiwa village in Bomet have raised concern over rising cases of motorcycle theft.
Most of the stolen motorcycles have not been recovered -- leaving many residents feeling frustrated and helpless.
The most recent case happened on Monday night, where two motorcycles were stolen. Although the matter was reported to the police, the motorcycles are yet to be recovered.
“These motorbikes are our means of livelihood. Many of us have worked hard to buy them, and some we acquired on loans,” said Joseph Kitur, a resident of Koiwa.
“Many of us don’t feel safe in the village, and that’s why we are asking for help,” added Kitur.
Residents have been asked to work closely with Nyumba Kumi officials and local administration to enhance security in the area.
“This requires collective responsibility from the community. As officials of Nyumba Kumi we will do all we can to ensure residents are safe, and their property safeguarded,” said Michael Kipng’eno -- a resident actively involved in the Nyumba Kumi Programme in the area.
Meanwhile, the locals have initiated public awareness programmes on motorcycle theft prevention, and other collective security measures residents can take to protect their property.
Residents are also calling for increased police patrols in the area to enhance security.
