The body of a baby girl who was reported missing on Sunday was on Friday discovered in Kamweti river, Kirinyaga county.

Residents of Gikumbu village in Gichugu have been combing the area in search of the missing child.

The child went missing on Sunday under unclear circumstances.

“The body was discovered by a woman who had gone to the river to fetch water,” said Faith Wanjiku, a family member.

According to the girl's father Anthony Muchira, his daughter was at home playing with other children up to around 11am that Sunday.

“I remember handing her a piece of sugarcane as they were playing with my neighbours' kids.

“Moments later, I could not see her with the other children – forcing me to call her mother who was at the church,” Muchira said.

The mother, Melody Muchira, said it was difficult to explain what had happened.

She said they didn’t understand how their daughter ended up at the river.

Kirinyaga East sub-county Police commander Johnson Wachira said the police are investigating the incident.

“At the moment we are treating it as a case of drowning, but we are continuing with our investigations,” said

The body was taken to Kibugi funeral home awaiting for postmortem.
