Body of a man who drowned two weeks ago in Kirinyaga retrieved

The body of an 18-year-old man who drowned in River Sagana, Kirinyaga County 17 days ago has been retrieved.

The search operation came to a close after the body was found by divers at Kianjege village in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County.

The family of Mark Anthony Karuri led by his mother Virginia Muthoni has been camping along River Sagana for the last 17 days.

Muthoni said her son was on his way home from visiting his grandmother when he was swept by the raging waters.

A team of divers drawn from Sagana led by Samuel Kanyuira found the body at least 500 metres from where he is said to have drowned.

"We hoped to find his body soon after we spotted his bag. We have worked tirelessly and are grateful that we can now proceed with burial plans," his distraught mother told Citizen Digital.

The body has been taken to a nearby mortuary, with the family keen on according their son a decent burial.

"It has been an exhausting journey from our village in Gatithi to the river. We live about 30 kilometres from here," a family member added.
