Bartolimo High School: Parents of rioting students asked to clear fees, pay for damages

Rioting students from Bartolimo boys high school in Baringo have been asked to clear school fees before their children can be allowed back to school beginning February 17.

Over 2000 students went on riot on Thursday last; storming teacher's quarters forcing them to flee after they pelted their houses with stones.

The school was closed indefinitely after following the strike.

The decision to have parents clear outstanding fee arrears and cost for damages incurred after students rioted last week was arrived at during the school board of management meeting held on Monday, February 14.

The students are alleged to have gone on strike claiming they were being harassed and put under immense pressure with regards to discipline in the school.

Reports indicated that a few days before the strike, teachers had moved to conduct inspection and confisticated mobile phones from students - something that allegedly angered the students.

Reports indicated that teachers conducted an impromptu search at the dormitories shortly after midnight - where they found many students with smartphones, some chatting and others playing mobile phone games.

"They were forced to surrender the communication gadgets which the school has banned. The students began throwing stones as they chased teachers away," Baringo north sub county education director Kiprono Langat said.

Police from Kipsaraman were sent to help contain the situation, and would later receive help from other officers from Kabartonjo.

Situation was later contained and all students sent home over fears they would burn the school.
