One person was on Tuesday burned to death after a gas cylinder he was reportedly lighting exploded in his house at the Kwa Ndeti slum, in Mavoko Township, Athi River.

Athi River Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Patrick Mwangi confirmed the incident, noting that fire started in one of the houses following the gas cylinder explosion, before spreading to adjacent houses.

According to Mwangi, the fire destroyed nearly 50 houses in the area – and destroying a wide range of property.

“I am asking well-wishers to come to help those affected by the fire. Many families have been left without homes today as a result of the fire,” he said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and helped to put out the fire.

Police who arrived at the scene took the body of the deceased to Machakos Level 5 Hospital morgue.
