A family in Komolo village, North Yimbo, Siaya County, is in mourning following the death of their 14-year-old son in River Yala.

The boy, identified as Pascal Okoth, a pupil at Bar-Kanyango primary school, was attacked and killed by a crocodile on Saturday evening while taking bath in the river.

According to police incident report, the boy had gone to the river to fish in the company of friends when he decided to take a swim in the river after a long day of fishing.

It was then that a crocodile reportedly attacked him, dragging him deep into the raging waters.

The other minors could only watch helplessly as the reptile dragged their friend away.

Senior Chief North Yimbo location Vicklice Opil Rabut confirmed the incident.

“The other children raised alarm attracting members of the public, who tried to hunt down the crocodile, because they could see it still dragging the child’s dead body in the river.

“After hours of struggle, the crocodile abandoned the body which was then retrieved with the help from police,” said Rabut.

The body was taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, officers from the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) have begun a search in an attempt to find the reptile.
