A 62-year-old woman Wamumu location, Kirinyaga county, has been set free over "insufficient evidence" after being in prison for 11  years over links to the murder of her late husband.

Lucy Karimi Nyaga was set free after the High Court in Kerugoya ruled that there was insufficient evidence to link her to the murder.

She was arrested on 21st September 2013 and taken to Wang'uru police station, being the main suspect in the murder of her husband Robert Njagi Nyaga.

According to her lawyer Kemto Magara, after she was arrested, an inquest  was opened upon whose conclusion, she was charged with muderer and locked up at Embu women's prison until her release on Friday.

An appeal was lodged.

Judge Justice Richard Mwongo, while delivering his ruling, said that the prosecution did not have enough evidence to warrant the accused's conviction.

Speaking shortly after her release, Karimi said, "It has been tough but I'm looking forward to starting over."
