7 women-led startups awarded Ksh.8.7M for sustainability projects

Seven women-led Kenyan startups have been awarded Ksh.8.75 million, through the Standard Chartered Women in Tech Program. 

The startups focus on sustainability and were chosen for their innovative use of technology and commitment to social, environmental, and economic impact.

The program, in partnership with @iBizAfrica-Strathmore University, selected the startups for their potential to drive sustainable solutions in sectors such as agri-tech, health-tech, bio-fuel tech, and recycling. 

The benneficiaries include Moma Renewable Energy, Hayah Cradle to Bloom, Zidallie, Gwiji for Women, Zaoshinani, AerialGIS, and PsychCare Clinic.

According to organisers, the startups demonstrated excellence in solving social economic needs, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) alignment, utilising emerging technologies including IOT, artificial intelligence, Augmented and virtual Reality, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Blockchain, Drone Technology, and Biometrics.

The award ceremony, themed ‘Empowering Women for a Sustainable Future,’ was presided over by Strathmore University Vice Chancellor Vincent Ogutu, Standard Chartered Bank CEO and Managing Director Kenya & Africa, Kariuki Ngari.

Ngari highlighted the importance of female leadership in driving sustainable growth. 

“We are immensely proud to witness the graduation of the seventh cohort of our Women in Tech program. Each of these remarkable entrepreneurs exemplifies the spirit of innovation and resilience that Standard Chartered champions’’ said Ngari.

Since its launch, the Women in Tech program has supported over 64 women-led businesses, with 32 receiving seed funding to scale their ventures.
