The national women's wheelchair basketball team has intensified its non-residential training at the Nyayo Gymnasium ahead of the East Africa Games, which will be held on November 20, in Kigali, Rwanda.

The games come barely a month after the team posted a stellar performance in the All Africa Para Games in Accra, Ghana, finishing in third position.

But the team's captain, Caroline Wanjira, says they are working on their defense, which had shortcomings in Ghana.

"We have decided to focus on our defense more, making sure we polish it to near perfection because in Ghana, it was visible that our man-man marking was a problem and it deprived us of the chance to win the title," Wanjira said.

To ensure a better performance, the team has been training with their male counterparts under the guidance of head coach Florence Sarah.

"When we went to the All Africa Games, we went with 12 players and the four we left behind are now with us in training, and anyone who slacks in training will be left out," coach Sarah said.

This will be the first time Para Games will feature in the East African Games.

Kenya is considered the rock of this region after making commendable progress, including qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
